Description: The spatial distribution of Al Ghazal fishing gear used in Abu Dhabi Emirate. Al Ghazal is an encircling gill net used to catch large pelagic fish. On moonless night, fishermen actively scout the sea water surface on bioluminescence manifestations which indicates the presence of pelagic fish schools. Once encountered, fishermen set out the net in an L-shaped manner and the warp line is towed to close the net around the school of fish. The net hangs vertical as a wall but does not necessarily touch the sea bottom. Going inside the enclosure the fishermen make a lot of noise to chase the fish into the net. Al Ghazal is regulated and only tarad fishermen operate this fishing gear from October to April. Data originates from Abu Dhabi commercial fisheries statistics stored in the National Fisheries Information System (NFIS), 2010-2012. Enumerators interview fishermen on their fishing trip whereabouts, utilizing a marine grid with spatial units measuring approx. 18 by 18 km. This allowed to pinpoint the actual fishing grounds for the Al Ghazal fishing gear more accurately. The total sample size was 2,238 records obtained from Delma, Al Sadar, Al Marfa, Free Port, Saadiyat and Al Bateen landing sites.
